Safe Driving Practices and Laws

Emergency Vehicles Hazardous Loads Slow Vehicles Scanning Small Children Turning and Trucks

Hyrodplaning takes place at about 50 mph and a very wet road.

Emergency Vehicles

You must yield right of way to any police car, fire engine, ambulance, or other emergency vehicle using a siren and red lights. Drive as close to the right edge of the road as possible and stop until the emergency vehicle(s) have passed. Never stop in an interesection, continue thru.

It is illegal to follow within 300 ft of any emergency vehicle on call. It is illegal to travel to an incident scene (fire, accident, disaster, etc.)

Hazardous Loads

Vehicles carrying hazardous loads have diamond shaped signs. Such vehicles are required by law to display those signs and to stop before crossing railroad tracks.

Slow Vehicles

Slow vehicles usually have an orange triangle on them and travel less than 25mph. It is a traffic offense to scare horses or stampede livestock.

Bicyclists must ride: in same direction as traffic (not against it), in a straight line near right curb or edge of road (not on sidewalk), must make turns in same way as drivers using same lanes and hand signals, may legally move left to turn left or to pass, may ride at left edge of a one way street.

Scanning

Look down the road 10-15 sec ahead of vehicle (one block in city, 0.25 mile on freeway). Look to side and use mirrors. Look beyond car(s) ahead of you. Do not tailgate, allow >=3 sec gap. Use 4 sec: when being tailgated, road conditions bad, slippery road, driver behind wants to pass, towing, following large vehicle, see bus or RR crossing, or behind a motorcycle.

Car Truck
Speed Distance Speed Distance
35 mph~210 ft to react and stop 35 mph~420 ft to react and stop
55 mph~400 ft to react and stop 55 mph~800 ft to react and stop
55 mphtravel 1600 ft/sec. 55 mphtravel 1600 ft/sec.

Turn on you lights if you cannot see 1000 ft ahead. In fog use low beams and increase disance. In a heavy rainstirm or snowstorm, you may not be able to see further thna 100 ft ahead - in which case drive no faster than 30 mph. Keep windows clear!

Small Children

Any child under age 6 or weighing <=60 lbs must be secured by a federally approved child restraint system and ride in the back seat. This child may ruide in front if no rear seats or rear seats are fback or side facing, or restraint system cannot be installed in rear seat, all rear seats are occupied by children under 12 yrs, or a medical person requires a child to be in front seat.

A small child may not ride in front seat of an airbag equiped vehicle if: under 1 yr, or less than 20 lbs, or is in a rear-facing restraint system. For all passengers allow 10 in for airbag expansion.

It is illegal to leave a small child alone in a closed hot car, or with ebgine running, keys in the ignition, or both.

Turning and Trucks

When turning the rear wheels follow a shorter path and turning radius than the front wheels. The longer the vehicle the greater the difference between front and rear turning distance and radius. This is why big rigs must swing wide to complete a right turn.

A truck driver has large blind spots. If you cannot see the trucker in their side mirror then they cannot see you!Do not saty on the side of a truck if possible, it gives the driver no option in an emergency. Trucks appear to be travelling slower because of their size.
